How I use AI.
These are the rules I work by on every project. They're adapted from frameworks nonprofits already trust, and I'd rather you hold me to them than take my word for it.
- AI drafts, a person sends.
Anything that reaches a donor, a customer, or the public waits for someone on your team to read it and approve it. AI is great at a first draft and bad at knowing when it's wrong.
- Your accounts, your data, your workflows.
I build inside the accounts you own and pay for. If we stop working together, everything keeps running and nothing is held hostage.
- No sensitive data in tools that train on it.
I use business plans or tools with training switched off, and I keep personal information out of prompts unless there's a real reason for it to be there. Health information never goes into consumer AI tools, because they won't sign the agreement HIPAA requires.
- I'll tell you where AI was used.
You'll know which parts of the work AI touched. If it matters to your donors or customers, I'll help you tell them too, in plain language.
- Automate the copy-paste, not the care.
Thank-you notes, condolences, apologies, and hard conversations stay human. I'll automate the reminder to write one. I won't write it for you and let it go out under your name unread.
- The smallest tool that works.
Plenty of jobs need plain automation and no AI at all. It's cheaper and more reliable, and it uses a lot less energy and water. I reach for AI when it's the right tool for that particular job.
- No hype numbers.
I won't promise you'll save twenty hours a week or double your donations. The Audit estimates hours saved for each automation, and we check those estimates against what happens once it's running.
Where these come from.
I adapted these from three public frameworks, and you can read every one of them yourself.
- NTEN's Generative AI Use Policy Template The starting point for the policy every Audit client gets.
- The Fundraising.AI Framework Ten principles for responsible AI in nonprofit fundraising, reviewed twice a year.
- IMC USA's Code of Responsible Use of AI Written for consultants specifically.
You get one too.
Every Audit includes a one-page AI use policy for your organization. It covers which tools are approved, what information stays out of them, and who reviews what before it goes out.
If this is how you want AI handled at your organization, start with an audit.
